Be on the lookout for these 4 things

House hunting is a huge milestone in a students’ life and marks the beginning of your new founded independence. You will now cook and clean for yourself whether you’re in a flat share, house share or dorm room.

But before all of that, there are contingency steps HYBR would recommend you follow before you sign a tenancy agreement. You will save yourself many potential problems if you look out for these 4 things when looking for your dream student home.

What’s the maintenance of the building?

When viewing your potential accommodation, note the state of the place as this can save you from dodgy landlords who could try and pass off existing damage as your responsibility and it might jeopardise you getting your deposit back .Check the condition that it’s kept in; is there a smell? Is there damp? Are there any nuisance noises that echoes throughout the building when you open the taps? Are the wallpapers peeling off? Are there any leakages? This will be your new home and you’ll be spending a lot of time here, make sure it is somewhere you want to go back to.

 Is the signal strong?

The recent Covid-19 pandemic outlined just how important a virtual connection is to stay connected with the world and it is almost impossible to get through university without an internet connection to do your research and have access to your online resources.

Checking whether the signal is strong will save you from a lot of frustration in the long run.  The last thing you want is for your essay to take ages to upload onto Turnitin with only a few minutes to spare.

Who manages the property?

Is it managed by an independent landlord? If so, contact the current lead tenant and ask them what their experience has been like. If it has been managed by a letting agent, look them up on reviews! Make sure that there hasn’t been a horrible court case or any red flags that you should be aware of.

What we really mean is, make sure you are renting through HYBR ;)

Is it convenient for you?

How long would it take for you to get to university, the shops and are there good transport links? What is the parking like in the area? The environment and location are very important to make your university experience as hassle free as possible.

These are all contingency inspections and being on the lookout for these 4 things in the beginning will save you so much time, money and any potential long-term headaches.

At HYBR, we ensure housing conditions are acceptable and that prices are fair for all student house hunters. If you’re searching for a new home, please get in touch.
