In response to the rise in Covid-19 cases, the government decided to implement a second national lockdown effective from today (5th November) until 2nd December to reduce infection rates and save lives.

One key difference this second lockdown has is that universities can remain open but students and staff must observe social distancing. This means no large gatherings and household mixing. So far, students have received a bad rep for breaching lockdown restrictions. Universities have issued hundreds of informal warnings and costly fines to students for hosting large parties, breaking self-isolation rules and not wearing masks.

If you’re living in student accommodation with housemates that aren’t following the rules, here are HYBR’s 4 proactive tips you can follow to stay safe.

1. Lead by example

The only thing you can control is yourself. You do your bit by following the rules; wear your mask, wash your hands regularly and don’t attend parties should you be invited. If there isn’t a leader in your house share, you can step up as one.

2. Try and ensure you keep your distance with people outside your bubble

If you want to go for a one-on-one walk, keep your distance. Coronavirus is supposedly passed through person-to-person and surface contact, so keeping two metres a part with other people reduces your risk to it. If and when you do come into contact with them, ensure you wash your hands (government guidelines are to wash them for 20seconds) and sanitise.

3. Talk to your housemates

Set boundaries with them and emphasise how it upsets you. If you communicate your discomfort and concerns in a civil and respectful way, they may feel compelled to change their behaviour.

4. Look after your mental and physical health

Prioritising self-care during this time will set strong foundations in place. You can still exercise, stay hydrated and eat nutritious food. This will make a world of difference to how you feel and how you handle conflict.

Going into another lockdown is not ideal but we’re all in this together. In less than a month’s time the world will open up again. In the meantime, stay safe, stay well and reach out to those around you if you are struggling. The HYBR team are always here if you need support.
