Not only are indoor plants great to enhance the overall appearance of a space, but they have been shown to boost your mood, increase creativity, reduce stress and eliminate air pollution, making for a healthier and happier you.

Good health relies on much more than just diet and exercise, your environment impacts your mental and physical health. The right house plant can actually make a big difference in your mood, stress level, your sleep quality and even your breathing.

Here are five houseplants that can help solve a few common health related issues and that are also pretty.

A fern plant with a hook.

Fern

Ferns are easy to grow and prefer indirect sunlight, however you should check the soil daily to make sure that it’s kept moist. They are to be kept in rooms with a cool temperature, with a humidity level of 50 to 80 percent. Fern may be the most ideal houseplant to have in your home if you live in a location where humidity tends to be a problem. This plant is a natural humidifier, it is amongst the best air purifying plants that can combat unwanted toxins. Ferns need to be placed in any air-conditioned room in your home and it can also indirectly benefit any dry skin that you may suffer from.

A potted aloe vera plant.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera plants need to be deeply watered and their soil needs to dry slightly between watering. They do very well with lots of sun but can turn brown if they get too much of it. Keeping your aloe vera plant under indirect sunlight is the best. Beside being a very stylish and practical addition to your home, this plant purifies the air of  formaldehyde and benzene – two chemicals commonly found in household cleaning products – and has amazing healing properties as well. The gel inside the leaves is full of vitamins and naturally antibacterial making it ideal for treating minor cuts and burns including sunburn.

Lily

Lilies should be planted in a pot with all-purpose soil and kept slightly most throughout the entire year (without overwatering). They can survive in both low and bright light, but do best in shaded areas. This beautiful houseplant is a master of air pollutant removal – working hard to absorb ammonia, benzene, xylene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene throughout your home. To get the most benefits place yours in a bathroom, kitchen or laundry room.

Lavender

Lavender plants prefer well-drained soil and lots of sunlight and they also need deep watering, but be careful not to water them very often. The best way to  water your lavender plant when the soil is nearly dry. This houseplant can be placed  anywhere in your home, but putting it in your bedroom is especially helpful since it may help you sleep better. Lavender may also help soothe restlessness, nervousness, anxiety, depression and insomnia.

Rosemary

Rosemary can be put in any spot where it has access to bright sunlight. This houseplant should be watered evenly throughout the growing season, but will need less water in the winter.  This plant is considered a cognitive stimulant and can help improve memory performance and quality. Rosemary  is also known to boost alertness, intelligence, and focus. It doesn’t hurt to keep a rosemary plant nearby in places like your home office or any other room where you could use a mental boost.
